They will happily explain your payment process options. WHY AREN’T YOU OFFERING MORE PROGRAMS? It is no secret that COVID-19 has impacted the number of programs we are able to safely run for Summer 2020. Our programming teams conducted risk assessments for each summer program and service according to the British Columbia Recreation & Parks Association guidelines, the BC Restart Plan and health authority recommendations. The programs offered this summer were determined to be low risk and include numerous new protocols to ensure safety of staff and participants. We considered a number of factors throughout the assessment including ability to move the program outdoors, physical distancing protocols, personal protective equipment requirements, hand hygiene provisions and touch point sanitation and align with the Province’s approved Recreation Restart guidelines. IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAMS? We are working hard to make programs as safe as possible in this time of uncertainty. It is of the utmost importance that we all continue to follow the rules set by the health authorities to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. All available programs have undergone a risk assessment and our staff have been trained on the latest safety procedures that align with health authority recommendations andWorksafe BC requirements ensure programs run as safely as possible. Physical distancing will be built into all our programs. Shared equipment use will be minimized or eliminated. HOWCAN I HELP KEEP PROGRAMS SAFE? Forall, personalprotectivemeasures canbe implemented to increaseyourcomfort and safety. Please referto allcurrent recommendations from Health Authorities regarding the steps you can take to increase your personal safety at this time. Personal hygiene measures such as increased hand washing are required and encouraged throughout programs. If you are sick, stay at home. This expectation will be strictly enforced, no exceptions. Should a participant fall ill, immediately call Customer Service at 604-467-7422 to advise and discuss next steps. We understand that entering this “new normal” is unfamiliar territory and encourage you to reach out with your questions or concerns. Your safety is our priority! It is of the utmost importance that we all continue to follow the rules set by the health authorities to mitigate the spread of COVID-19; our City staff are here to help ensure all health recommendations are being followed. WHAT DO I DO IF SOMEONE ELSE IN MY PROGRAM IS NOT FOLLOWING PHYSICAL DISTANCING RULES AND/OR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES? If you notice that someone else in your program is not following the physical distancing and/or safetymeasures required of your program, please take steps to increase your personal safety immediately (ie, clean your hands, maintain physical distance, etc). Notify your camp staff/City staff so that they may address this with the participant. WHAT IF I AM UNCOMFORTABLE CONTINUING TO ATTEND A CLASS THAT HAS STARTED? Our regular cancellation policies are in place (PG 4) with the exception of one adjustment: Pro-rated refundswill be provided to registrants without the requirement of a doctor’s note if they become ill and are unable to attend the program. If the Provincial Health Officer or Local Health Authority provide us with an update that requires us to limit our class sizes or to cancel your program, we will refund those who are impacted. All available programs for Summer 2020 have undergone risk assessments which we hope you will consider when deciding whether or not to register for one of our programs. HAS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY CHANGED DUE TO COVID-19? Our regular cancellation policies are in place (PG 4) with the exception of one adjustment: Pro-rated refundswill be provided to registrants without the requirement of a doctor’s note if they become ill and are unable to attend the program. All available programs for Summer 2020 have undergone risk assessments which we hope you will consider when deciding whether to register for one of our programs. OUR AQUATICS TEAM'S MESSAGE TO YOU

Our commitment to you is to offer high quality, fun and safe programming. COVID-19 has impacted our programming and we are not currently able to offer safe aquatics programs. Aquatics programs are traditionally offered with hands on instruction. Working through this new world of physical distancing and reimagining how we can deliver our programs is in progress. We are in touch with our program governing bodies such as the Canadian Red Cross and the Lifesaving Society of Canada to work within their guidelines for re-opening our program delivery. Please continue to monitor our digital information sources for updates in the future. In the interm, please take some time to educate yourselves and your family on some important water safety information that is available through the Canadian Red Cross as well as the Lifesaving Society. Both agencies also have great video channels.

TELOSKY STADIUM PUBLIC ART BY PHYLLIS ATKINS

The newest public artwork in Maple Ridge, located at the new fieldhouse at Telosky Stadium, is sƛ̓ənəqs kʷə speʔəθ (“A Bear’s Feast”) by q̓ʷɑt̓ ic̓ɑ̓ ɑ̓ ɑ̓ ɑ, Phyllis Atkins, Kwantlen First Nation artist at the new fieldhouse at Telosky Stadium. Parts of this design are also featured on the utility kiosk and 2020 street banners. The artwork illustrates a bear’s feast and references the animals, fish and river which are important to First Nations. “My artwork depicts a bear’s feast, eating wild strawberries and yet to catch his salmon – both are important for his survival. Like the bears, we as Indigenous people depend on our connection to the land and water for gathering and harvesting our traditional foods to sustain our families and community throughout the year. It’s also an important cultural practice that we “set the table” and a feast is shared before all ceremonies or important work is undertaken.”  - Phyllis Atkins

MAGGIE COLES LYSTER

I have come across a fewpeople internationally who know of Maple Ridge, but most people I meet internationally haven’t heard of our beautiful city and instead ask how my pet moose is doing and whether living in the snow year round gets cold, haha! WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 OR 20 YEARS? My goal post-cycling is to study veterinary medicine and specialize as an aquatic veterinarian. I plan to attend a North American school and, after graduating, to work on the west coast if possible. Before that happens, my plan is to become a multi-time Olympian withmore than one gold medal hanging around my neck. You know, just your average bucket list items. I know that with the skills I have and my determination, I can achieve my goals…though I know it won’t be easy in the slightest! Life throws so many curveballs from crashes, injuries, major success and failures. The biggest lesson I have taken away from it all is that you can be dedicated to your goals, but you have to be ready to be flexible with how you get there. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR NICKNAME, ELLE PIRANHA? “Elle Piranha” is a nickname that was given to me back in 2016. I was 17 years old and racing in Switzerland at the Junior Track World Championshipsattheomniumevent(amulti-race event where whoever has the most cumulative points at the end wins). Halfway through the final

TELLUSABOUTTHEEARLYYEARS. I was born in Maple Ridge, BC, on February 12th, 1999 and grew up on the North Alouette River, enjoying hot summers rafting down the rapids and autumns watching the salmon spawn. My family lives in Maple Ridge, which ismy “home base” when I’m not travelling and racing. I have two younger sisters, Kaelen (17) and Campbell (11), who are both so talented! Before I was born and when I was a baby, my parents (Barry and Nona) ran an adventure tour

raceIwas in3rdplace!ButariderbumpedwheelswithmeandIwent flying, slidingdown the45degreewoodenbankingonmy side. Mymechanic and coach ran over, put me onmy bike and pushed me back into the race. I had fallen back to 4th place. There was no pain at this point, I was riding on pure adrenaline and racedmy heart out to regain my medal spot…and I did it! I received bronze at my first Junior TrackWorld Championships! After the ceremony, I was lying in the medical tent having slivers removed and wounds cleaned and an elderly French man, who had just watchedmy race, pointed tome and said tomy dad “elle, piranha.” Since then, it has stuck. TELLUS ABOUT YOURBIGCRASHONTHE BOARDS AT THE SIX DAYS OF COPENHAGEN TRACK EVENT. The biggest takeaway from that experience had to do with my recovery afterwards and addressing the trauma from the accident. I was racing a multi-day track race in Denmark, called Six Days of Copenhagen, and I crashed on the last lap of the last race. I ended up severely concussed with four fractured bones in my

business. When I was four, my dad bought a bike store. Not long afterwards he managed a bike team as well, so I grew up in a bike-loving family. We no longer own the bike shop, but cycling still plays a huge role in all of our lives. My dad is my coach and travels with me to many of the international events. We make a great team! I ran cross country and rode horses competitively in my early years, but cycling was always my passion and, as I got older, it became obvious to me that this was my calling. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT MAPLE RIDGE? Being at the foot of the mountains! Out of all of the places I have travelled—and I have seen over 15 countries as well as a lot of North America in the past five years—nothing brings me as much joy and comfort as looking up and seeing the Golden Ears. When people askme what I miss most fromhome when I’mon the road, the Golden Ears are always what come first tomind.

face, some broken ribs, a punctured lung and lots of road rash. I couldn’t fly due to my injuries, so I was stuck in Copenhagen until being cleared to fly home on my 19th birthday…not exactly how I had pictured celebrating! I pushed to be back on the bike as soon as I was medically cleared from my injuries and focused only on my physical recovery. I soon realized my bike racing wasn’t the same as it was before my crash. It was time to face the music: I was scared. I was having daily flashbacks to the moment I regained consciousness and it became clear that I needed to focus on my mental and emotional recovery, not just the physical. It took lots of patience and work with psychologists, sports psychologists and a dedicated practice with mindfulness and meditation to get myself back to the place I’m at today. I have regained control of my power and am now able to be the best version me. The bottom line is that trauma can take many forms and affects our physical and mental beings. It has changed my perspective on what recovery really entails. IFYOUCOULDSAYONETHINGTOYOURFELLOWWOMEN IN SPORT, WHATWOULD IT BE? Though it can be intimidating to speak up against inequality, abuse, harassment or lack of opportunities for women in sport, using our voices to support one another is crucial to our success. Frompersonal experience, I knowhow it feels toweigh speaking up with feeling you might jeopardize your reputation, or even your career, by calling attention to inequality. Know that there are others on your side and who may be experiencing the same inequalities - all of our safety and happiness matters. We must support and believe one another. Use your voice to speak out when you are ready, and don't be afraid to reach out for help or support along the way. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT OR ACHIEVEMENT THUS FAR? I won the Junior World Championships! Those “rainbow stripes” are what most racers dream of and what gets them on the bike to train everyday. To win something I had dreamt about for years and to be named the best junior cyclist in the world was almost unbelievable. Also, kind of a funny moment to be proud of, and definitely not the same as winning a World Championship, but, last year, when I finally finished my online English university course, I completely melted down and cried tears of joy. 2018 had been such a longyear, with 3 crashes andconcussions, and I endedup having to drop my online university courses because my post- concussion symptoms were making focusing and studying nearly impossible. I am very hard on myself when it comes to failure, so to drop those courses was awful and took me a long time to accept that it was necessary, and that there was nothing wrong with me. I just had to take time to heal. Finally, being able to work through and finish a course felt huge for my recovery and self-growth and was a feeling of accomplishment that will be with me for a long time.

HOWHAS COVID-19 AND BEING QUARANTINED IMPACTED YOU? HOWARE YOU COPING? When this all escalated in early March, I had just flown to Manchester, UK for a track race. Theyendedupcancelling the race five hours before we were supposed to start! It was the weekend when flight bans and lockdowns were implemented and I couldn’t get through to the airlines to change our flights. I ultimately ended up on the last flight from the UK to the USA before the travel ban was implemented. I’m thankful to be staying with family. The Olympics have been pushed until 2021, all races have been postponed or cancelled until at least the fall and key training facilities, such as the gym, have closed. My routine and direction have definitely been thrown. At first I would get on the bike and wonder what I’m training for? COVID-19 has forced me to slow down in some aspects of my life, but has also inspired me to take time on other things that would normally come second to training. I have been taking the time for meditation and yoga, have worked on my online courses, and am becoming certified as a personal trainer. Now more than ever, it has been important to connect with friends and family. Take care of yourselves, everyone!

OUR PRC YOUTH TEAM'S MESSAGE TO YOU

We believe that community engagement and recreation is more important now more than ever for our physical and mental health. We also believe that connecting with one another is incredibly important, and that is why we will be taking extraordinary measures to ensure your safety. That’s why our summer programs look different this year. All of our youth programs have undergone careful risk assessments and, as a result, new safety measures and procedures have been put in place to keep everyone safe. Most of our programs now require pre-registration. Once you’ve registered, you will receive information from our program team by email about the safety measures and procedures relevant to your participation. Our youth team will continue to monitor health authority recommendations and will notify participants of any program changes, delays or cancellations. Our youth team is committed to helping you have the best summer possible and we would be happy to discuss any of your questions surrounding our summer programming or new safety procedures. We look forward to a summer full of adventures and are moved by Maple Ridge citizens’ relentless effort and positivity while we navigate this global crisis together. How long have you been involved with Youth Services? I have worked in youth services for three years. What got you interested in working with young people in Maple Ridge? I enjoy being able to be a positive influence on young people in our community and to get to teach them things and learn things from them in return. What inspires you about the youth you work with? I have had the opportunity to meet some very resilient young people in our community. The obstacles they have faced and the difficulties they have been able to overcome continues to amaze me. What’s your passion and how do you bring it to work? I enjoy being outside – hiking and rock climbing. Our annual week long hiking trip to Lake Lovely Water with youth and the rock wall in the Greg Moore Youth Center allow me to share my passions for climbing and being outdoors with youth in our community. What’s something the youth of Maple Ridge have taught you? The youth of Maple Ridge have taught me that your perspective and attitude are the most important things – not your circumstance. If you could give one piece of advice to emerging adults and youth, what would it be? A little bit of kindness goes a long way!

MAPLE RIDGE SPORTS HISTORY

SPORTING EVENTS

You may already know that Maple Ridge hosted the 1983 and 1998 BC Summer Games, but did you know that almost 100 years ago the city hosted an annual Sports Carnival? The first was in July 1937 and was a way for the city to exhibit all of the amazing sports opportunities on offer in Maple Ridge. Two baseball diamonds and a lacrosse box had just been built at the Aggie grounds and the city was keen to invite other lower mainland teams to compete at their new facilities. The first festival of sports included the much anticipated Hammond Cedar baseball team playing the Asahis baseball team from Vancouver. The final score was 9-8 for Hammond! The Sports Carnival was a great success, with hundreds in attendance and fun had by all!
