SILVER VALLEY BEAR AWARE EVENT

After a series of bear incidents in the Spring of 2019, a group of Silver Valley residents decided to hold a public event aimed at better education and awareness about bears, their habits, and how best to limit their interactions with humans. Approximately 70 neighbours came together for an afternoon of eating, socializing, and most importantly, educating as Dan Mikolay from Ridge Meadows Recycling Society andWildSafe BC shared valuable information and tips on bear awareness. The ‘Bear Aware’ event also included a kids craft and colouring table, a visit from a local conservation officer, and a draw to win a bear resistant garbage bin. Bear sightings are often a daily occurrence in the Silver Valley area due to the surrounding wildlife corridors, forests, bogs, and berry fields. However, a group of like minded residents within the community saw a need for further education on how best to live around these species, and acted on it. The event connected families within the community who are also interested in this cause, contributing to the overall health and vibrancy of their neighbourhood, bears included.
