SPORTING EVENTS

You may already know that Maple Ridge hosted the 1983 and 1998 BC Summer Games, but did you know that almost 100 years ago the city hosted an annual Sports Carnival? The first was in July 1937 and was a way for the city to exhibit all of the amazing sports opportunities on offer in Maple Ridge. Two baseball diamonds and a lacrosse box had just been built at the Aggie grounds and the city was keen to invite other lower mainland teams to compete at their new facilities. The first festival of sports included the much anticipated Hammond Cedar baseball team playing the Asahis baseball team from Vancouver. The final score was 9-8 for Hammond! The Sports Carnival was a great success, with hundreds in attendance and fun had by all!
