NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH & RECONCILIATION SEPTEMBER 30, 2021 On June 3, 2021, the federal government announced that the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation had passed into law. Subsequently, the BC Government announced its intention to commemorate the holiday this year on September 30 followed by a commitment to engage with Indigenous Peoples to determine how or when the holiday should be commemorated in future years. City of Maple Ridge facilities will be operating according to holiday hours on September 30, 2021. This year’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation overlaps with the annual Orange Shirt Day. Organizers explain that this “opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. [It is] a discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. [It is] a day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected.”
