MAPLE RIDGE SPORTS HISTORY

LACROSSE Originally an Indigenous games played outdoors, Lacrosse was a sport played in the early 1900's. The Katzie team almost always won! The 1930’s saw Lacrosse changed to a sport that could be played in a gym or outside in a boxed off field, helping it gain popularity in rainy B.C. In 1936, the Finnish community in Websters Corners fielded their first team in a regional league. The rough and exciting game was so popular that by 1937, plans were made to build a lacrosse box on the Aggie grounds and was completed by July of that year. It has remained a popular sport in Maple Ridge ever since.
