Indigenous Culture

Maple Ridge recognizes the traditional territories of the Katzie and Kwantlen First Nations and respectfully acknowledges the many nations represented by the urban First Nations, Métis and Inuit population in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver Area. Maple Ridge has been home to Indigenous peoples

for more than 10,000 years. Traditionally, Maple Ridge was known by its Halkomelem name, Q’wa?acstan’ which translates into “the place where the golden eagles are.” A downtown art mural created by Kwantlen First Nation artist, Brandon Gabriel, celebrates our deep-rooted past and rich culture by depicting golden eagles superimposed over the Golden Ears Mountains.

The third week of June, Maple Ridge celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day in Memorial Peace Park. The special day includes drumming, storytelling, dancing, arts vendors, a Bannock cook-off, children’s activities and a full day of traditional activities to highlight the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada. https://www.frisociety.ca
