CHILD & YOUTH

MEET HENRY AND ELIJAH CHILDREN'S STAFF

HENRY How long have you been involved with Children’s Recreation? I started volunteeringwith YOI in thementorship program. From there I helped launch the Mini Air program and in October 2017 I started working with Children’s. What got you interested in working with children in Maple Ridge? I was always working with Children in Maple Ridge through elementary schools and I thought working for the City would provide me some neat opportunities and really got me talking to lots of people. What inspires you about the children you work with? What inspires me about the children I work with is sharing my passions with them. What’s your passion and how do you bring it to work? At AKC, I play hockey and talk about music and skateboarding. I even got to bring photography into work and teach children what I really love to do. What’s something the children of Maple Ridge have taught you? They have taught me a lot. Especially how to just let things go and how important having fun is. If you could give one piece of advice to someone wanting to work in this field, what would it be? Live in themoment with the kids and there is a lot that you can learn from them.

ELIJAH How long have you been involved with Children’s Recreation? I have been working as a recreation support staff for the City of Maple Ridge for two years now. What got you interested in working with children in Maple Ridge? The Greg Moore Youth Centre was like a second home to me. I volunteered in the mentorship program for the youth centre from the age of 13-16. Two staff (Richard and Jesse) told me to apply as they thought I’d be a good addition to the team. What inspires you about the children you work with? When I look at the children at work, I see the people of tomorrow. I see young kids developing skills and enjoying themselves. What’s your passion and how do you bring it to work? My passion in life is skateboarding, as it taught me that when you fall, you get back up. Because of the City, I’m lucky enough to share my passion and to say I help run a weekend skateboard and scooter program. What’s something the children of Maple Ridge have taught you? The children of Maple Ridge taught me no matter what your age is, you’re never too old to have fun. If you could give one piece of advice to someone wanting to work in this field, what would it be? Be optimistic, spread kindness, be a role model and be excited because every day is going to be different.
