YOUTH &ADULT

What inspires you about the children youworkwith? The group of children I work with express a great deal of passion, kindness, creativity and imagination but the one quality that truly sticks out is leadership. For only being in between the ages of 5 to 12, these children always strive to take responsibility, to speak the truth and to lead by example. It makes you want to improve yourself so that you can be an amazing role model for them, to teach them right from wrong and always be there for them like they are for their classmates. What’s your passionandhowdoyoubring it towork? I try my best to be a great role model and be a big part of their development. Teaching them values like honesty, respect, forgiveness, and responsivity important help to build their personalities and help them grow as people. Just having that opportunity to be a part of their growth is a very special feeling. What’s something the children of Maple Ridge have taught you? It may sound silly but for the past year of working frontline with children, one thing they have taught me is to just laugh… laugh until it hurts. We as adults present ourselves in a mature manner and hold back on feelings but all that really does is make us seem like boring old people, sometimes you just need to let loose and have a good laugh out loud. We have expressions for a reason, and if we have a reason to laugh, why overlook what we are feeling inside. If you could give one piece of advice to someone wanting to work in this field, what would it be? My piece of advice would be to make sure you truly have the patience and passion towards kids. This profession may seem like an easy job but it is not what everyone expects, you have your good days and you have your bad so having an open mind and patient approach to things goes a long way in building a healthy and trustworthy relationship with the children.

How long have you been involvedwith Children’s Recreation? I have been working in Children’s Recreation with the city of Maple Ridge for just over one year, I was hired towards the end of the year in 2017. MEET CLAUDIA CHILDREN'S STAFF What got you interested inworkingwith children in Maple Ridge? I have always had a passion for working with children, ever since I started babysitting and volunteering at elementary schools. I have come to realize that kids bring me much joy and the biggest smile on my face.
