MAPLE RIDGE SPORTS HISTORY
In the 1920’s, with no professional sports teams in the area, amateur sports reigned supreme. For one of the most popular early sports in the area, baseball, Port Haney and Port Hammond fielded their own teams for much of the early 20th century. In the early years, players would make their own equipment and uniforms. Haney and Hammond were both championship teams and would compete in local leagues which included playing local teams from Langley, Port Moody, Coquitlam, New Westminster and Vancouver. The Haney team won a number of different championship matches, including the 1920 Dewdney League Championship. The Hammond Cedar Team won the B.C. provincial championship in 1924, going on to the Canadian national finals, only to have the Calgary game snowed out. They, and all our past sports players, have brought excitement and pride to the people of Maple Ridge for more than one hundred years.
