Honouring Our Indigenous Heritage Celebrating Maple Ridge 150

In recognition of the heritage of Indigenous communities and their deep cultural roots, new Maple Ridge 150 street banners are featured throughout the city. The banners were designed in collaboration with Joshua Carr, Kwantlen band member and his partner, Amber Oliver, to acknowledge that the Kwantlen First Nation and Katzie First Nation have been here since time immemorial.

Our concept represents our deep connection to the river, shared artists Carr and Oliver. Since time immemorial, our people have travelled and fished the Fraser River to create sustenance and abundance for our communities, as well as build relationships with one another. We wanted to create a design that embodied our traditions, as well as honours the relationship between Qw’ó:ltl’el, q̓ic̓əy̓ and the City of Maple Ridge. Our design uses the river as that connection, representing the bond between the people and the salmon and the harmony of the moon and the tides. We give thanks to all that the river has to offer us. hay ce:p q̓ə.

Public Art & Community Initiatives Celebrating Maple Ridge 150

Meet the Artist Carly Bouwman is a Fraser Valley based freelance visual artist/ designer with a personal art practice that includes an ongoing collection of expressive abstract and nature-themed paintings. In addition to her personal works, Carly specializes in creating custom commissioned art for clients and offers a wide range of services for public, commercial, and residential projects. With a 3-year graphic design diploma and over 20 years of experience, her commitment to community engagement is evident in her narrative-driven commissions, vibrant public murals, and contributions to museum exhibits and public celebrations. Through Carly’s art, she strives to nurture a sense of interconnectedness within our communities and natural surroundings.

Project: Community Engagement Mural In collaboration with partners and residents, Carly will design 3 neighbourhood murals and 1 city mural that reflects a combination of natural elements and community landmarks that identify what the residents of Maple Ridge appreciate about their community. The design will include vibrant colours that speak to the energy of the themes and the imagery will be simplified into graphic shapes that can easily be painted by all. All completed murals will be unveiled at the September 14, Our Neck of the Woods, event in Memorial Peace Park . Paint with Carly at the Following Events:

May 18 | Tsuyuki Park Rock the Block to paint an East Maple Ridge Mural that incorporates elements of Webster’s Corner, Albion, Thornhill, Whonnock and Ruskin.

June 15 | Blaney Hamlet Park Rock the Block to paint a North Maple Ridge Mural that incorporates elements of Silver Valley, Alouette Valley, and Yennadon.

July 1 | Canada Day in Memorial Peace Park to paint a mural for Maple Ridge.

August 10 | Hammond Park Rock the Block to paint a West Maple Ridge Mural that incorporates elements of Hammond, Laity View and Port Haney.

Meet the Artist Rain Pierre RainAwakens.Com Title: Albion Lookout

What the art means from the artist: “I feel that the Albion Community Centre was giving a vibe of looking out for one another. The feeling I got there was that people were working together and happy to be at a community centre that is welcoming for all walks of life. There was mention that the sun sets can be seen from there. I had to include it to remind people that tomorrow is a new day. The momma bear and cub were brought up as visitors every spring. They are spirit bears that are looking in both directions to remind us to look out for one another. We must look at both the past and the future to grow. They are wearing cedar headbands as a tribute to our peoples culture and survival. The 3 strands from the headband represent past, present and future - all of which we must acknowledge when heading towards reconciliation and bettering the relationships. I also added the mountains in the background to represent our backyard - Pitt Lake.”
